On Thursday, Alex Morgan, a long-time star of the United States Women’s National Team, officially announced her retirement from soccer. In an Instagram video, the 35-year-old Morgan expressed her deep pride in her storied career and shared her decision with clarity and happiness. “I’m retiring,” Morgan said. “This decision wasn’t easy, but I knew at the beginning of 2024 that this would be my final season.”

In addition to her retirement announcement, Morgan revealed she is expecting her second child. She and her husband, Servando Carrasco, already have a 4-year-old daughter named Charlie. “I am pregnant,” Morgan announced in the same video. “As unexpected as this news is, we are so overjoyed. Family means everything to me, and I am grateful for the unwavering support and sacrifices my husband and family have made throughout my 15-year career.”

Morgan’s illustrious career includes two World Cup championships, an Olympic gold medal, and an Olympic bronze medal. She began with the USWNT under-20 team in 2008 and joined the senior squad in 2010, becoming a key player for one of the most dominant teams in sports history. Morgan co-captained the national team alongside Megan Rapinoe and Carli Lloyd from 2018 to 2020.

She was a finalist for the FIFA World Player of the Year in 2012 and was named U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year in both 2012 and 2018. In 2019, she won the ESPY Award for Best Female Athlete and was part of the USWNT’s victorious squad at the World Cup.

In domestic play, Morgan achieved NWSL Championship victories with the Portland Thorns in 2013 and with the former Women’s Professional Soccer league in 2011.
